The Boston & Albany --- New York Central's Gateway to the East.©

In his continuing series on American railroads, Stan Trzoniec aims his cameras at the Boston & Albany, a line deep in heritage with roots going back to around 1832.  While this part of the line is interesting, this ex-New York Central railroad really comes into its own as it moves west from Worcester, Massachusetts to its large yard at Selkirk, New York. At one time, this was the Western Railroad and with the savvy engineering skills of George Washington Whistler, he plotted a route over tough terrain with combined grades holding at 1.67 percent to reach an elevation of 1,459 feet above sea level. The foreword is by Douglas Bowen, Managing Editor of Railway Age.  Over 200 black and white and color photographs are included in this handsome, 13" X 11" coffee table book.

Sand Patch Grade --- The Battle For Elevation on the East Slope©

Always a popular location, the Sand Patch grade is located in southwest Pennsylvania and offers a challenge to all the trains going over the Allegany Mountains.  A labor of love for the past decade, the author will take you on a profile of the line from Cumberland MD. to Garrett, PA and down the west slope to Connellsville, PA where it all began.  Maps, photos and history of the line are fully documented in this classic book on one part of the now departed Baltimore and Ohio railroad.
